Our Pioneers

Our first Irish Pallottine missionaries went to Africa in 1940. They survived a risky wartime voyage and landed in Mombasa , Kenya hundreds of  miles from their destination.

Undaunted they set out on foot for Mbulu, Tanzania but were saved the long arduous trek by a kind trader who gave them a ride in his truck. The good seed of the Gospel quickly took root and flourished in Mbulu.

One of the first converts was the chief who brought many of his people with him to the faith. He himself became a model Catholic.

His daughter became a nun and chose as her name in religion, Sr. Vincent Pallotti in honor our missionaries. Having graduated as a nurse in Ireland she returned to Tanzania where she has served her people as a dedicated nurse for over forty years.

Mary, the first baby girl to be baptized in the area, had a son George, who became the first African to be ordained a Pallottine priest in the Irish Province 33 years ago. Since 1940 our missions have given one African Bishop and close to a hundred African priests as well as countless African nuns to the church
